Discourse Analysis of Islamic Terrorist Propaganda on the Internet

Thesis Discourse Analysis of Islamic Terrorist Propaganda on the Internet uses the method of thematic discourse analysis to study jihadi discussion forums in the cyberspace. Since the beginning of the last decade of the 20th century the Internet has became one of the most powerful communication tools through which are jihadi terrorists able to reach thousands of Muslims worldwide. After the traditional Western media had intensively begun to filter terrorist messages shortly after 11/9/2001, jihadists found a perfect way how to draw attention of these media once more - not directly, but through the Internet communication which is widely used by traditional media as a source of their content. The first part of this thesis presents theoretical framework for the second, purely practical part. Firstly, this paper deals with propaganda as a form of communication, shows the Internet as a medium that has absorbed all other media, and analyses the terrorism spread through the Internet. The main part of this study focuses on the jihadi discourse, through which jihadists view the Islamic world as suffering under the oppression of the West to persuade passive Muslim audience to join the jihad. German Salafi Jihadism: Radicalizing messages in the lectures of the German jihadi preacher Denis Cuspert

The diploma thesis "Salafi Jihadism in Germany: Radicalizing Messages in Lectures of a German Jihadi Preacher Denis Cuspert" deals with the analysis of the internet video messages disseminated by Denis Cuspert - the most significant German-speaking Jihadi-Salafi leader, in terms of the radicalization potential that is spread through his lectures. The aim of the thesis is firstly to identify the basic radicalization formulas relevant for the given research, which are to be found in the models of radicalization. In the analytical part, these radicalization categories will be applied to the argumentation strategies present in the lectures of Denis Cuspert. In order to analyse the given messages, a qualitative content analysis along with a framework analysis will be used. In connection with aims of the thesis, the framework analysis appears to be a fitting method, as it focuses on the issue of communication in terms of its mobilization potential, with an emphasis on the strategic use of language. This method can therefore be a good indicator of the extent to which the statements succeed in addressing the sympathizers of the movement and making them act. The diploma thesis deals with the problem of Islamic terrorism. The theoretical part explains the key concepts related to this topic and introduces some major terrorist organizations. The main topic of the theoretical part is radicalization and its process. Furthermore it is investigated why some individuals are threatened by radicalization more than others. The practical part analyzes the perpetrators of selected terrorist attacks. Typical characteristics that most attackers have are identified. The work is concluded with a discussion that addresses possible developments in terrorism in the coming years.

War on Terrorism Through the Prism of the US: The Case Study of Bosnia and Herzegovina

The main goal of this paper is to examine the perceptions related to Bosnia and Herzegovina as a country that fosters terrorism. The concepts of radicalization, extremism and terrorism are examined as separate entities in the context of Bosnia and Herzegovina, where the confusion of these contexts is particularly harmful, prompting negative attitudes and conclusions. It includes a review of the origins of Jihad in Bosnia and Herzegovina during the 1992-1995 war and transformation into the Salafi Movement after it. Some theoretical concepts consider the popular perspective on the Salafi community, relations between the Salafi Community and the Islamic Community the responses of media who propagate both the valid and stereotypical information, the motivations that drive the Salafist community, but also the motives of Bosnia and Herzegovina's society for the exploitation of this community. Other focuses are the changes that take place after the September 11th terrorist attacks, and their effect on Bosnia and Herzegovina are discussed in the context of the fight against terrorism and the re-examination of the intentions of the Salafi communities. War propaganda in Islamic State's videos

The diploma thesis deals with the circumstances of origin of the terrorist organization Islamic State in its theoretical part. It focuses on the religious context of the ideology of the Islamic state and the origins of the organization. The so-called Islamic State can currently be considered one of the most acute security threats of the 21st century. The war with the so- called Islamic State is also a media war, a war taking place in the media and global cyberspace. An important mean of this war is propaganda. The work is also focused mainly on the propaganda of the so-called Islamic State with a focus on video production. With the influx of brutal videos from IS production, the question arises which way media should handle this material. Obviously, the videos were designed for media, among others. To be distributed and viewed by as many recipients as possible. In the practical part selected videos from the IS production are analyzed and their example shows what topics are present in IS video production and how the Islamic State propaganda works with the video.

Jihad in Islamic Juridical Discourses

The purpose behind this theses is to introduce the doctrine of jihad as a legal concept established in Muslim jurisprudence [fiqh] through the analysis of Arabic primary medieval legal sources and the writings of contemporary Islamic intellectuals. Firstly, its author will focus on the notion of jihad in classical Muslim jurisprudence and then proceed to examine the modern reinterpretations of jihad. The introduction provides and insight into the basic features of the religious law of Islam and its system. The second chapter is concerned with the definition of jihad and siyar in the books of fiqh as a regulatory basis governing the conduct of military expeditions. Then, it reviews the interpretative issues faced by Muslim exegets of the Quran and hadith posed by the application of abrogation mechanism [nasch] and analyses the early writings on jihad with respect to their structure, areas of regulation covered and the use of legal arguments and sources by their authors. The analyzed works include hadith collections of Al-Bukhari, Abu Dawud and Ibn Majja and the books of Malik and Al-Shaybani considered as the first codifications of Islamic laws of war.
